National Survey of Psychiatric Comorbidity
in Substance Abuse Patients

Robert Christopher, Ph.D.

INTRODUCTION

The following study examined prevalence rates and patterns of psychiatric comorbidity among 3,841 dually diagnosed substance abuse patients in various programs throughout the country. The programs and patient populations were matched for characteristics outlined in the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations Standards. The following excerpt represents the findings of this study.

One of the significant findings of this research was that the vast majority of dually diagnosed patients's profiles in all programs participating in this study, have met the DSM III-R diagnostic criteria for multiple diagnoses on both Axis I and Axis II. Although other studies have also observed the multiplicity of diagnoses among the substance abuse patients with psychiatric comorbidity, there is still insufficient evidence that this clinically significant issue has been given the amount of attention which it deserves in terms of assessment of effectiveness of current treatment approaches to substance abuse.

The findings of this study, supported by numerous other similar research, indicate that during the last three decades, the spontaneous rate or recovery (remission) among the substance abusers is equal to, or greater than the rate of recovery with intervention, both inpatient and outpatient type.
